Every cup of coffee starts with a farmer dedicated to transforming a coffee cherry into the beverage we all love.
Like the Suchini family. Osvaldo Suchini has been doing the hard work of coffee producing in Guatemala for over 30 years–and his experience shows. The coffee quality we get from him is exceptional!
But he didn’t get to this level of specialty coffee overnight.
In 1994, Osvaldo climbed Cerro El Gigante in Chiquimula, Guatemala and saw its potential for coffee farming. Its high altitude (1600-1800 meters above sea level), volcanic soil, and unique microclimate ticked all the boxes for growing high quality coffee.
Over the years, the Suchini family has worked to make that potential become the reality it is today: the El Gigante Coffee Estate. The cornerstones of El Gigante are not just producing great coffee; they are stewarding the land and supporting their community.
Spanning 125 hectares, El Gigante dedicates 40 hectares to preserved forest, intentionally protecting Guatemala’s native ecosystem. In addition, to prevent losing genetic diversity from planting only one variety of coffee, El Gigante boasts varieties like Geisha, Pacamara, Bourbon, Catuai, and more than 20 rare cultivars.
And, the Suchinis are committed to empowering women in their community, with 80% of their collaborators being women. When it comes to coffee, the Suchinis practice excellence from start to finish–applying their agronomic expertise to the land, handpicking each perfectly ripe cherry, using precision-controlled fermentation methods, as well as their state-of-the-art dry mill.
We love to partner with farmers like the Suchinis because not only do they give us great coffee–they give back to their land, their community, and the Guatemalan coffee industry as a whole.
