History of the Coffeehouse Part 4 | The Modern Coffeehouse

The evolution of the modern coffeehouse starts with Alfred Peet’s work in bringing specialty coffee to the public and turning coffee roasting into an art form. From there, independent coffeehouses sprang up, but it wasn’t until Starbucks, and their model for fast-growing coffeehouses that provided arabica beans to the general public did we see a significant expansion in modern coffeehouse culture.

History of the Coffeehouse Part 3 | The Evolution of the American Coffeehouse

When Pilgrims arrived in what would become America, tea was the primary drink. There was so much British influence that coffee wouldn't gain momentum until much later. The first coffeehouse opened in Boston in 1676. People would continue to choose tea over coffee until the Boston Tea Party. It wasn't until after the Revolutionary war when people would begin to choose coffee over tea. The shift in momentum would not be evident until the end of the War of 1812. The quality of American tea was not very good, and while America began importing higher quality coffee from Latin America, people still settled for somewhat mediocre coffee. Coffeehouses would start to open, but their purpose was more for conducting business than for drinking coffee.

History of the Coffeehouse Part 2 | From Turkey to Europe to the U.S.

We know that coffeehouses began in the Ottoman Empire, but how did they spread to Europe and then eventually to the U.S. Let's take a trip around the world to learn more about how the early coffeehouses originated. We start in Turkey, go to Italy, make a stop in France, eventually get to England, and finally to the U.S. Coffee made its way around to many other places around Europe. If I were writing a book on the coffeehouse origins, I would stop and visit many other sites. But this is a blogpost, and I would like you to read it until the end. So, this is a brief and concise history of the coffeehouse.

The Ancient Beginnings of the Coffee House

The first recorded coffeehouse, known as Kiva Han, was in the Turkish city of Constantinople and dated back to the 1470s. Since there is little documentation on the Kiva Han, it isn't easy to pinpoint the first coffeehouse's exact year. Most accounts of the earliest coffeehouses are considered legends and may not be historically verified. There is enough documentation only to suggest what might've been done. Through the historical accounts, a common thread exists between the ancient and the modern coffeehouse. In ancient days and today, a coffeehouse was a place to engage in discourse and gather in a social setting while enjoying a delicious cup of coffee.
