One of the two foundational varieties in specialty coffee. Sweetness, balance, and a depth of flavor that's hard to beat.

More information about our Coffees with a Bourbon Variety collection.

Bourbon is one of coffee's two foundational varieties, alongside Typica. Named after the island of Reunion (formerly Ile Bourbon) where it was first cultivated outside of Ethiopia, it's been shaping what coffee tastes like for centuries.

In the cup, Bourbon brings sweetness. Caramel, brown sugar, ripe fruit. There's a depth and roundness that lighter varieties don't always achieve. It's the variety that defines "good coffee" for a lot of people, even if they've never heard the word Bourbon applied to anything besides whiskey.

Bourbon is also the parent of many popular specialty varieties. Caturra, Catuai, SL28, SL34, and dozens of others all trace their genetics back to Bourbon. When you taste a great Bourbon lot, you're tasting the foundation that an entire industry was built on.

Our current Bourbon offerings include Florencio Villatoro's washed bourbon from Huehuetenango, Guatemala and Rodin Villatoro's natural-processed bourbon from the same region. Sambewe AMCOS's washed bourbon and heirloom blend from Tanzania shows how the variety expresses differently in East African terroir.
