Guate Gold is from Costa Rica?

Every year we have a coffee that we internally refer to as Guate Gold. We use this same photo because it is basically our version of a blend. It isn’t a blend, but it is a coffee that stands out with these particular flavor notes. We carry it for a while and it is always our best seller. This batch (which is a bit limited), is not a Guatemalan coffee at all. In fact, it is an amazing Costa Rican coffee from a farm that Eden and I (Matt) visited in March of 2023. We got to know Jhonnathan and his vision for bringing amazing coffees to West Valley Costa Rica and wanted to be able to offer one of his coffees as soon as we could. This coffee is great and as soon as I cupped it, I knew it was our next “Guate Gold”. Order it and let me know what you think. Should we go back to Guatemala for this flavor profile once this one is sold out? Do the notes match what you’d expect from the photo? This shift was the cause of much debate internally, so let us know if we made the right decision.

flavor notes explained

caramel - This coffee is incredibly smooth with a heavy emphasis on developed sugar. Caramel presents these two major traits in an easily understood way.  However, we did notice a stonefruit sweetness as well. In fact, there was much debate on if this year’s coffee was more caramel or more stonefruit.  Let us know what you think!

milk chocolate - Coffee and chocolate go hand in hand, but every once in a while a coffee tastes more chocolatey than most. This  honey processed bean stands as no exception with a deliciously smooth and sweet note of milk chocolate.

cream - The idea behind the note of cream was in order to describe the mouthfeel. This cup boasts a particularly smooth profile overall.

about Finca Desamparados

Jhonnathan Camacho is a descendant of one of the first coffee growers in the West Valley, his grandfather Rafael Camacho Vega. His primary occupation is as a doctor, but a passion for coffee has stayed in his family, and he continues to grow on a small farm. Since Jhonnathan is busy with his medical practice, he has partnered with Genesis mill to take care of the processing and drying of his coffees during the harvest, but he still stays close by: He lives nearby to the Mendezes and will visit a few times a week to check on his coffees until they are ready for shipment.

The Milenio Variety: Milenio is a first-generation (F1) hybrid from a cross of T5296 and Rume Sudan. It has high yield potential, performs well when grown at high altitudes, and is resistant to coffee leaf rust. A handful of groups including CIRAD, ICAFE, IHCAFE, PROCAFE, and ANACAFE created this variety.
