Quick Guide

What is this coffee?

This coffee is among the most expensive coffees we’ve ever purchased. Sure, it comes from one of the most rich and beautiful regions for growing gesha in the world, but what is more important to us is it comes from a wonderful relationship we have in the industry. In the mountains of Boquete rests an immaculate production run by the Altieri family. In about 2013, Eugene had cold-call- emailed Matt looking to sell some of his green coffee to us. Little did we know that email began a relationship of over a decade and involved some of our best coffees. We as a family visited the Altieri’s in person in the spring of 2025, where we shared a meal with Eugene and his daughter, Anna Lynn, toured their estates, cupped coffees, and of course selected this beautiful gesha.

Processing Method

Washed Process- Washed processing is coffee's most common and reliable method. Through depulping, controlled fermentation, and thorough rinsing, this water-intensive process minimizes variables to produce clean, bright cups that showcase origin characteristics and variety.

Country

Panama- Panama's coffee industry focuses on quality over quantity, producing just 0.1% of the world's coffee while earning recognition as one of the finest. Home to the exclusive Gesha variety, Panamanian beans are well-balanced with chocolates, caramels, berries, and unique floral notes.

Altitude

1850masl - Altitude is typically correlative to the potential complexity of a coffee bean. The higher in altitude the coffee is grown, the denser the bean will be, resulting in a more dynamic cupping experience.

Classification

Black Label- Black labels are the best coffees we can find period. Whether it’s a hyper-limited crop or an auction lot, we do not let cost be a prohibiting factor in our search for the finest coffees in the world.

Gesha

Every industry has its "before and after" moment. Movies had Star Wars. Basketball had Michael Jordan. Smartphones had the iPhone.

For specialty coffee, that moment was 2004—the year Gesha changed everything.

When Hacienda La Esmeralda's Gesha stunned judges at the Best of Panama auction with its unprecedented floral notes and jasmine-like aromatics, it didn't just win. It revolutionized what people believed coffee could be.

But to understand why Gesha matters so much, we first need to understand what coffee varieties are.

Washed Process

Every morning, millions of us reach for coffee without thinking about the journey from cherry to cup. But here's what most people don't know: the way those cherries are processed determines whether your coffee tastes like chocolate, berries, or wine.

Coffee processing isn't just technical necessity, it's where science meets art, where tradition meets innovation, and where a producer's skill can transform an ordinary harvest into something extraordinary. The same coffee, processed three different ways, becomes three completely different experiences in your cup.

Panama

When you think of Panama, you might think of a canal or that narrow strip of land connecting continents. But sitting at lunch with Eugene Altieri in Boquete last March, we discovered something that reshaped how we see this country's coffee story. Origin visits are always great, but what I wanted to know is what makes a coffee $10k per kg at the producer level. Is it just marketing or is there something to Panama's quality. What we learned very quickly was the attention to detail in Panama is unmatched. Whether it's taking 11-15 passes to only pick ripes or sorting every cherry by hand or keeping the mill perfectly clean, we saw production like no other for coffee that tastes like no other.
