2025 Coffee of the Year • Combo 2 Pack
This has become a really fun yearly tradition…
In this bundle we literally spared no expense, hunting down a couple of the best coffees we could find. Each of these coffees are a gesha, but are from very different parts of Central America, with entirely different approaches to the processing. The coffee from the Suchini family is processed to really push the acidity and fruited notes, whereas the coffee from the Altieris is washed, intended to showcase the delicate floral notes that are so common in Boquete Panama.

Altieri Specialty Coffee is a family-owned group of coffee-growing farms from Boquete in Panama, founded by Eugene Altieri, an Italian American businessman residing in Panama. They have two farms located in Boquete, called Mima Estate in the area of Callejon Seco and Pipim Estate in the area of Alto Lino. They produce varieties of Geisha, Typica, Catuai, and Caturra. These prize-winning coffees are grown on the Eastern slope of the Baru Volcano, surrounded by the virgin cloud forests of the Baru National Park, at a height of between 1,600 and 2,200 meters above sea level, in an area known as Callejón Seco and Alto Lino. This area consists of volcanic soil, drained on the slope of the volcanic mountain, at an altitude where winds from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans collide creating microclimates different from the rest of the country. After fifteen years of coffee growing and earning various awards, the second generation of the Altieri family is following Eugeneʼs legacy, working together to expand the Altieri Specialty Coffee brand.

This coffee stems from a connection we’ve recently made with Brendan, the head importer of Newland Coffee Imports. Our relationship with Newland coffee (Brendan) began when we were cupping with our friends at Necessity coffee in Encitas. Brendan happened to be there at the time and hopped into the cupping with us. He mentioned that he was an importer looking to get the ball rolling on this new venture of his and we exchanged info, kind of your typical networking chit chat. A month goes by I’m in the shop and Brendan swung by, said hi, and dropped off a sample of an auction lot of Guatemalan. We already have strong ties to the Villatoros in Huehue, so we weren’t expecting to bite on the sample. But we cupped it like we usually do samples and were pretty blown away by this bean’s complexity. We’re loving the aromatic nature of this coffee, with a super airy profile full of punchy tropical fruits and acid and rounded out with a very floral finish.
