Grind Levels Explained

Proper coffee extraction is critical for achieving that perfect cup at home. Grind size is one of the few ways to be able to directly affect that extraction rate.

In addition to whole coffee beans, we currently offer 3 different coffee grind levels:

Coarse (Think sugar in the raw, maybe more coarse)
Recommended for

  • Chemex Brewer
  • French Press
  • Cold Brew

Medium (Slightly coarser than table salt)
Recommended for

  • Any flat bottom brewer
  • Kalitta wave
  • Cloth filters

Fine (Slightly finer than table salt)
Recommended for

  • V60 pour overs
  • Typical cone filter coffee pots
  • Aeropress

If you're interested in ground for Espresso, choose fine and mention something in the order comments.

If at all possible, we recommend grinding at home. We prefer Baratza coffee grinders and offer several of their models for sale. Click here to shop for one of their brewers.

In the Cup:

A funny story comes from this coffee. When we had first received the sample, the importer we work with had accidentally sent a couple tidbits of information about the coffee that was not accurate to the bean we were receiving. He later revised and sent new information, thankfully. But the biggest thing we were hung up on was the discrepancy of the process method. Originally, he’d sent that this coffee underwent a multiple week fermentation and drying process, but in the revision it was actually just a proprietary washed process. This coffee is so incredibly dynamic, that we had a hard time believing this was anything but a fermentation process bean. This little mishap speaks directly into how impressively complex this coffee is. When cupping, a fragrant citrus aroma sets the tone for a constant vanilla sweetness. Notes of strawberries and dark chocolate come forward as a smooth acidity when cooling, making this a pour over’s dream with a bright, dynamic flavor profile.

El Tigre

This coffee is one of those situations where we both know little about Daniel Hernandez's farm and we have interacted directly with him. We know little about the farm because it is a small farm and there just isn't a lot written. This is not uncommon for producers in Colombia. I mean, we bought 1 24kg box from Daniel and that was the majority of this lot. However, I emailed them the other day to update them about how well this coffee scored on our cupping table. Based on the quality of the coffee and our featuring it in our Diamond Reserve collection, Daniel received a bonus. Just another step in pushing coffee forward at the producer level.
