ASPROGUATE is an organization that represents more than 1,900 small producers from the regions of Acatenango, San Martin Jilotepeque, Coban and Atitlan. Its purpose is to responsibly transfer benefits to sustainable value chain coffee producers. In this area of Guatemala, many husbands leave to work in the US and send money back to their families, so the farms represented are majority women owned farms.
One typical example of a farmer represented is Ciriaca Julaj Esquit of Finca La Falda. She's worked in coffee over the past 20 years with just a small lot and a milk cow, at an altitude of 1900+ MASL in the mountains of Aldea Patzaj, San Martin Jilotepeche. On her two small lots, she grows Caturra, Catuaí and Bourbon varieties. Of her seven daughters and two sons, six of her children live and work in the US. Doña Ciriaca is part of the El Rancho Cooperative, with 35 members (25 women, 10 men).
Another great member is María Roberta Julaj, in the La Providencia Aldea Patzaj San Martín Jilotepeque Cooperative group. As a single mother, Doña María has worked in coffee for over 25 years. For the past 3 years she's worked with Asproguate and organic certification. At altitudes between 1900 and 2050 MASL, she grows beautiful, healthy Bourbon trees. Doña María has one boy and three girls, and is incredibly dedicated and diligent.
On-Demand Roasting Explained
I'm sure that you've seen notes on our website about how 'We don't roast until you want it." or "Roasted Fresh After You Order", but have you thought about why and how we setup our business to do that?
